"Fast-Forward" Effect

Intermediate

Bring energy to your video sequences and avoid slow parts with the fast-forward effect in PlayPlay! This tutorial explains how to split a video clip into three parts and speed up the middle section to condense a lengthy action, shorten a journey, or illustrate a transition with rhythm. An ideal method for keeping your audience engaged while making your videos more dynamic and professional.

Here is the step-by-step method for creating a fast-forward effect on a video clip:

Choose a template and import your video

  • Open a project in PlayPlay and import your video clip into the library.

  • Click Add a screen and select a template containing media (e.g., Media).

  • Replace the default video with your own clip.

Trim the first part (normal speed)

  • Access the media trimming option.

  • Select the very beginning of the video (at normal speed) to create the sequence, then confirm.

Create the fast-forward section

  • Duplicate the first screen in the timeline.

  • On this second screen, adjust the trim range so that it starts exactly where the first section ended.

  • Set the end point of this sped-up clip and note its end timing.

  • Go to the Speed tab and select the 4x setting (or customize the multiplier according to your needs).

Add the third screen (return to normal speed)

  • Duplicate the first screen again to reuse the same source video.

  • Adjust the starting point of this clip to the exact end timing of the sped-up section.

  • Keep this clip at normal speed (1x) to conclude the action.

Pro tip: apply a visual filter

  • On the second screen (the sped-up section), click Edit, then go to the Filters tab.

  • Select a filter (e.g., color, black and white, blur) to visually mark the sped-up transition and enhance the dynamic effect.

Finalization

  • Preview the three-part sequence (normal speed, fast-forward, normal speed) before continuing with the edit.
