Split-screen effect

Enhance your interview footage with a split-screen effect and a transparent color block using PlayPlay! This tutorial explains how to apply a semi-transparent filter to one part of the frame, allowing you to overlay a title and a bulleted list. It’s a modern, stylish technique for structuring information, summarizing key points, or adding visual interest to a speaker’s commentary.

Here is the step-by-step method for creating a split-screen effect with a transparent color filter:

Importing and framing your video

  • Open a project in PlayPlay and import your interview footage into the library.

  • Add a "Media" screen and replace the default file with your video.

  • Use the "Crop" (Recadrer) option to shift the subject to one side (left or right), creating empty space on the other side of the screen.

Creating the semi-transparent color block

  • In the "Elements" tab, select a rectangular shape.

  • Resize and position the shape to cover the empty area of the screen (or the entire height).

  • Choose a color for the shape, then adjust its opacity to 40% to create a semi-transparent filter that allows the background to remain visible.

  • Set the start time and duration for the block on the timeline.

Adding the title and bulleted list

  • In the "Elements" tab, add a title (e.g., "Key Takeaways"), customize its color, and place it at the top of the transparent filter.

  • Next, add a list element, customize it (e.g., "Subtitles," "B-roll," "Dynamic elements," etc.), and overlay it onto the semi-transparent block.

  • Ensure that the subject's face remains clearly visible and that the text stays perfectly legible.

Timing and synchronization

  • Open the detailed timeline.

  • Adjust the timing of the title and list so that they appear slightly after the transparent color block.

Finalization

  • Preview the sequence to confirm the graphic style and continue with the editing process.
